Pr. Matt just joined Living Water as their pastor in the summer of 2019. He lives on Kent Island with his beautiful wife, Merry. Pr. Matt and Merry have been married since 2015, and have a daughter together, who happens to be the best daughter anyone could have asked for. The proud parents consider themselves very lucky.
Pr. Matt comes to Living Water from Frederick County, MD, where he spent many years serving two congregations in Maryland’s idyllic countryside.
Pr. Matt was born and raised in rural central Pennsylvania. He grew up in the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, and became a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America when he was twenty-five years old. He was nurtured in his Lutheran faith at Tree of Life Lutheran Church in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
In his previous career, Pr. Matt was employed by Mosaic Community Services in Baltimore, Maryland, where he worked both as a vocational and spiritual counselor for individuals living with severe and chronic mental illness.
On his journey to become a pastor, Matt attended some schools. He went to Yale Divinity School, where he concentrated on psychopathology and pastoral care. He also went to United Lutheran Seminary (formerly Gettysburg Seminary), where he learned all about spirituality, theology, and what it is to be a pastor. Pr. Matt also holds degrees in philosophy and criminal justice.
Pr. Matt also served as a chaplain at Penn State’s Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The research project he completed during his time as a chaplain resident was recognized and accepted for presentation by Notre Dame at a conference exploring the role of academics in human suffering.
Pr. Matt is an avid cyclist, and he describes this as one of life’s pure joys. You will inevitably pass him while he rides his bike on the highways and byways of Kent Island. He also enjoys strumming his guitar, and has tried his hand at playing in both Celtic and Dixieland bands.
