The ancient Israelites have returned from exile in Babylon, but soon thereafter they find themselves exiled once again. This time, they are exiled at home under Roman occupation. The ancient Israelites try to figure out how to respond to their unwelcome guests. Many agree resistance is the way to go. But among these folks there is disagreement. Some say violent resistance is best. Others say a new strategy should be implemented: non-violent resistance. Both sides believe their way is the way to go to free them from their exile experience at home. We reflect on this ancient debate, not to lift up the virtues of one kind of resistance over another, but to think about how the choices we make today determine if we will emerge from our exile experiences tomorrow.
